Retrospective

As written on 09/06/07
Top 3 things I've learned in 2 days about work:

-Sitting at a desk gets old- looking out the window I can't open at a beautiful sky doesn't.
-Coffee only tastes good when you're drinking it, not a half an hour after you've finished it.
-Music is my best friend at work.

Today
Top 3 things I've learned in 3 months about work:
-Sitting at a desk gets old- making time to get up and take a walk helps more mentally than one would imagine. Physically it obviously changes things up
-Staying organized is the only way to survive a fluctuation in work flow and keeping everyone's deadlines. I write everything emailed to me, phoned in, plopped on my desk on a list of to-do's so nothing gets forgotten. Even then, some things get left behind demanding tasks.
-Music is creates sanity, white noise and radio contests that let you earn the equivalent of frequent listener miles. I earned enough points from tuning in daily to attend a movie premier. Streaming Radio is cool!
I listen to Smiley's Morning Show and Z99.5FM. Really easy to set up, pretty reliable and volume control is much simpler than a radio across the room.

Holidays in an Office

Working in our office, many holiday goodies have been shipped our way. It was getting old having candy and cookies and popcorn sitting around until we had the privilege to unwrap this beauty! What a work of art!

GODIVA G Collection
This is what an $80 box of chocolate looks like:
I've never seen typography on CHOCOLATE BEFORE! I'll post pictures later that I look of the brown one with all the green G's on it!

Godiva's website reads:
"Our G Collection is the ultimate fusion of art and chocolate. Created by world-renowned pastry chef Norman Love, each handcrafted piece surprises the palate with a delicate balance of pure ingredients, brilliant tastes, and ultra-refined textures. Mexican Hot Chocolate, Thai Coconut, P.B & Jam, Vermont Maple Walnut, Caramel Macchiato, and Tasmanian Honey are just a few of this collection's many highlights. A gift that promises exquisite chocolate experiences for those who appreciate the epitome of chocolate quality and design. (10.3 oz.)"

All I have to say is WOW- my office has to do some pretty awesome stuff for people to send us THIS!

This stuff is a box of art! I almost don't want to eat it. Then I come to my senses- of course! These will help me design better!

Pretty Accurate

Wow. The previous post from 12/11 really sums it up with that cartoon. How is it only 10:53AM?!?!! I've been here 2.5 hours and it feels like it's 5 o'clock. I hope this day perks up!

I'm working on a cookie cutter brochure, slapping logos into it, swapping university names and cranking it out. Plenty of paper work to do today. It's creatively draining. I just have to remember how awesome my meeting was last week. That keeps me going. Logos, art, my brain... they have value!

12.12.2007

Hosted my first meeting

It was a huge success. I sat down with the University that our company (me) was designing new youth marks for. They loved the images I came up with!! Their mark is a kind of dog and I expanded on that by researching how that dog's puppies look and what makes them destinct. I hand sketched a bunch of stuff then I threw myself at Illustrator and fought with the tools until it looked like what I sketched... even 6 years into using the software extensively, it still gets tough sometimes. I also branched out a bit and developed alternative marks including a dog bone with their word mark on it and a dog tag on a collar with just the puppies head.

Life drawing classes would have assisted in preparing me for this project but my basic drawing class eons ago has proved very useful. I met with the Athletic Director, Marketing Director, Licensing Director and Owner of the bookstore to pitch my marks and describe my choices, influences and visions. They were extremely receptive, spewing ideas of how they could use the new ideas I'd thrown out... dog bone chew toys, plush versions of the puppy, dog bowls, young adult/college freshman female apparel along with onesies, bibs and the like. I love it!
I cannot wait to share with them the next revision of the marks.

My only regret was that I did not mount my logos. I think I'm saving that for the final presentation. I printed the different types of marks in storyboard form on separate sheets with titling and project info on them in full color and made packets with my agenda that were easily handled in the casual University commons/union meeting space.
Next time!

So... this is what it feels like to have a good day at work creatively?!

So Perfect

I love Toothpaste for Dinner (and Married to the Sea and Natalie Dee)
They are such a creative source of relief. Daily

Crunch

Self induced piles of paper work flood in after I foolishly mailed them out to gain signatures from clients. Now I must process them all and send half the stack back to clients... it hurts me to know how many trees I'm killing! Can't wait for paperless.

Logo development hasn't strayed far from sketches in free time as dedicated creative time doesn't exist. It can't be scheduled (yet) and it isn't an obvious priority to the office yet. Still teaching them. I get to present the logos I've worked on to our client and I realized I have no cutting mat or Exacto knives to cut the illustration board that I haven't purchased yet.
That's so funny to me!

Such is life stretching the creative limits of a marketing company.

Next bold step I'm holding out for, telling them our logo sucks and showing them our stationery system needs a revamp!
Tah-tah

AIGA Elbow rubbing + Reflection on what got me here

I attended a social networking event last night at a local pub, sponsored by AIGA Indy chapter. My friend from Purdue who graduated 3 years ahead of me in VCD invited me and I had a blast, met a lot of people and got to mingle with people like me! It's kinda tough working in an office as the only creative staff. While fun at times, it's hard to completely relate. I hadn't felt like I could just exhale until I got there. Glad I went.

Having not been a member in college, I really didn't know what I was in for. Not to the discredit of my peers' efforts at Purdue, the whole organization in undergrad was a bit political and to pay dues to participate didn't make as much sense to me. Holding a full 19 credit hour semester most of the time and 2 internships on campus with 26 hours going there plus all that homework.... oh yeah and being an active member in 2 other organizations and a little marching band participation.... I valued my free time (and the rare occasion I let myself have a night at the Cactus, as short as I had to keep it because of my internship hours Friday. The Pianoman made my troubles go away for a little while). But all the that strain and stress made it worth it and I earned a job doing what I'd studied and practiced. But my class room know how would have been NOTHING if I hadn't participated in other campus activities. It helped with networking directly into my seat in my medium sized office.

You too can make it. A lot of design work, a little Pianoman, a little sleep and a lot of drive.
Aaaaaaaand this posting has become quite the Hallmark Channel presentation. Sorry.

Simple Pleasures

Yesterday, was taken to lunch to celebrate coworker's 2 year anniversary with the company.

Today, gave a presentation to a local University about developing a youth logo. Explored all the different facets to consider: stances, personality, accessories, abstract/realistic... It was fun and there's a lot of information I can take with me to further the mark now as it grows...
This is the fun part!

11.21.2007

Half Way There

Living on a prayer...

One of the benefits of working in the collegiate industry is that work flow echoes activity on campuses. People go home the day before Thanksgiving thus work slows in the office. We might get to go home early. We even get the day after Thanksgiving off!

I'm told that winter holiday time reflects much of the same activity, with our campus contacts out of the office for more than a week. Maybe I'll get a winter break too?!

Slow times = catch up times + creative down time that lets me do REAL creative work.
As for now, I'll probably use the slow time today to go home early and clean my apartment as God only knows my later hours (6pm, sometimes 7pm) working at the office kill my ability to keep up the homestead right now- a habit that will have to change.

11.20.2007

Recovery

It's Tuesday. Everything is normal again. Where did yesterday come from and how did I possibly document it?!
I slept like a baby last night.

Paper work, returning emails and working on a youth mark for a school- that's today.
I have to develop a logo using a puppy. Damn you puppies- being all cute and/or sad looking. I have reached an obstacle. I can't make a puppy appear active without it taking over a playful and not tough persona. Can puppies be tough? No matter how I draw the eyes, they either don't fit the body language or look really sad instead of just functioning as eyes.

We needed more illustration classes at Purdue. I may have to resort to an abstract puppy. Ha!
More to come

11.19.2007

It might be Monday if...

(posted so others may be amused. I'm still smiling... so far ;-) )
9:00am Physical Therapist beats up my ankle. Late for work, arrive with ice bag for foot under desk
9:10am Buy coffee- I'm actually tired and it sounds good.
9:20am Realize I left my cell phone at home :-P
9:30am Get to work, Coffee still sealed
9:45am Drink half my coffee- yum--->ick
10:00am Sign for the first UPS package of the day
10:15am Realize how much work is piled up from the weekend because my superior is out of town and I'm now #1 and it all dumps on me
10:20am Remember why I don't drink coffee- yum = tummy trouble
10:30am Red Ink all over my hands setting the dumb date stamp mechanism (set it backwards only to realize it after it got ink all over itself... ink is NOT washing off and appears I am bleeding from a severe office injury)
11:25am Sign for new ink cartridge delivery (ironic?)
11:30am Cut my finger on unGodly sharp office scissors and bleed for real.... ugh!
11:40am Find a band aid
11:45am Caught up on email and have created a ridiculous to-do list
11:46am 15 new emails dumped in
12:30pm Still haven't caught up to emails- haven't eaten lunch (2 choices in the office fridge: left over turkey tetrazinni that I've been eating for days because I live on my own and it takes me that long to finish a whole dish, or eat a my cold slice of pizza from dinner last night) * finger stopped bleeding
2:00pm Meeting with the big cheese, clarify all the work I need to do, look forward to doing design work if all these emails and papers stop flooding my hands
2:24pm Still no lunch (this is not the usual scenario...)
2:25pm Co-worker comes in "off" her vacation to get stuff done, wants me to help- design, when will I get to work on thee?
3:00pm Print out paper madly to get it done in time to help co-worker.
3:10pm Answer the phone, and 2 other lines light up- this NEVER happens!
3:18pm I eat, quickly, out of necessity. Still waiting on coworker.
3:45pm Break for the bathroom only to walk in and see a man sitting on the floor. Surprise! The communications closet is located IN the women's restroom in a separate door. Weird, huh?! So I closed him in the closet, freshened up, and opened his little door again. Next time, I'm just going to come back later.
4:00pm Co-worker finishes printing items and leaves, letting me know I have a 5-reem stack of paper to sort, stuff into flat envelopes, label, and mail. Hooray for 4pm
(work...work...work...)
5:25pm Hammer out some artwork for signage requested earlier in the day (*what is the creative process and why should I spend time on it :-(.... )
6:00pm Phone call from the fiance, too busy to talk long.
6:30pm Walk out the door with so much to do tomorrow.

11.05.2007

I tried to fight it...

but somehow, subconsiously, I decided Blue and White were the appropriate sweater colors for the day after the Colts lost to the Patriots. I've put effort into avoiding taking on the appearance of a Colts fan and I go and wear this?! Ugh, I'm disgusted with myself.

Oh well! At least I'm warm. Onward to making a Monday a FUNday.

10.30.2007

Paper, email, phone calls and a cute pair of pants

It's all part of a days work. I've learned very quickly to commute, balance my day, manage home life and still wake up on time- and look good doing it.

A carpool or commuter line would be nice but I enjoy my new morning talk shows on the radio and the sights and sounds of my 30 minute drive.

My office doesn't have much personality yet and I'm hoping to hang something on my kakhi colored walls soon. It's only/already been 7 weeks?
My absolute musts?
-Good moisturizing hand lotion for all the work I do with paper: it helps prevent paper cuts.
-My Cubs mug: a little flair
-My RSVP Pentel pens: can't live without them
-My stash of healthy snacks in my drawer- Terra Chips, Sun Chips, Carmel Rice Cakes and dried fruit. Always a pick me up with texture.
-My music on my computer: I never thought I'd get tired of all 10GB of my tunes... I must listen to it a lot!

Stretching out a bit now and then snaps me out of the computer induced trance and turning my chair around to admire the view of the football stadium out my window does the trick.

It's fall and it's a surprise every time I walk out the door. Warm, cold, rainy, windy? Anything sounds exciting.

It's 4:39pm and it's about time to wrap up my papers and head out for a little bit of excersise!
Cheers!

Utter Dissapointment

a cross over blog from http://www.xanga.com/CharmedSoul
I kind of got a slap in the face this morning after developing a logo for a non-profit group/event that I spent a ton (literally) of time on. Their committee decided to develop a logo internally and ditch the 2 months of work that I'd put into it. I bent over backwards to communicate with them and consult them and they now have a p.o.s. logo that their committee likes. Argggggg. Sometimes donating time is worth it. Other times, you really, -wait, if I can't say anything nice.......
Encouraging words would be appreciated. I'm pretty miffed.

I also have to take two seconds back and appreciate what I do have going for me.
With a friend in the hospital and another friend grieving the loss of a younger sibling, my perspective should be much more accommodating.
I had a fantastic weekend, got some great photos with Todd to celebrate our engagement and loved the weater (especially with a Purdue WIN over Iowa!) His recital Friday was great and all in all I had an awesome weekend. I also have plenty to look forward to- a lunch and talk this week about the importance of brand identities and then alumni band with my friends. I'm walking pretty normal too! In the mood for a little piece of cactus action already.

This working girl is having trouble switching gears without getting the clutch caught a bit... nobody likes that sound.

Back to the grind-

A Favorite Comic Shared

I came across this on toothpastefordinner.com and it made me smile.
Work life is going ok- I'm getting used to not being a graphic designer 100% of the day and learning a ton about the licensing process for licensed vendors of collegiate merchandise and why it's so important to protect a school's identity and marks!
Love to all,
Cait

Brilliant

I loved this so much, I bought the ad agency's poster that they sell as a co-marketing peice. It now hangs in my office!
Make My Logo Bigger Cream

This pretty much sums up the graphic knowledge of those I work with.
And every client we'll meet!

Enjoy!

Working Girl

I'm at work! Finally!
Training over the past two days has truly been intense and the amount of information I will soon be entrusted to take care of is a bit daunting. But not as daunting as the giant 2 story photo of Payton Manning that stares at me through my office window from the RCA Dome in downtown Indianapolis.

The people are great. The commute has been easy. Waking up at 6am has been so much fun. I mean, who doesn't love rolling over and saying, "I can't believe it's only 6am. I feel so awake!"

My office is bare but holds a lot of potential and I can't wait to explore all of my neighborhood lunch options being right near Circle Center mall, the Omni Hotel and the RCA Dome.

My foot has found a temporary sanctuary under my desk elevated on an overturned box. Discomfort is unavoidable but getting up now and then has helped. Only a week and a half before I can return to being a road warrior!

Purdue's home game against Eastern Illinois will be my motivation for the week and a breath of fresh air. God grant me the strength and determination to make it to Friday unscathed!!!

Check out my company at www.smaworks.com. Our website needs some work- in due time... We're pretty nifty and we do a lot of cool licensing and marketing stuff. Our company is the guy that talks to schools and conferences and makes things run smootly as other companies produce logo'd and school branded merchandise. You'll hear more from me about my actual WORK later on.

Top 3 things I've learned in 2 days about work:
-Sitting at a desk gets old- looking out the window I can't open at a beautiful sky doesn't.
-Coffee only tastes good when you're drinking it, not a half an hour after you've finished it.
-Music is my best friend at work.

Ciao, world!

Life after Graduation isn't always G-L-A-M-O-R-O-U-S

Job hunt. woohoo. packing is great when you know where you're headed. I'm employed to my knowledge June 16-July 16 and then I'm free (unemployed.) I have housing until August 3rd.

After the music dies, teachers' voices fade, relatives' congratulations die out and your back pack gets lonely, it's time to realize you no longer belong anywhere.

Purdue has been home for 6 years. Now where?!
Thoughts provoked by a long weekend with family can be the most true...
I'll keep you posted on ponderings and wanderings.
